DTX Launch Detroit

Launch Detroit is a program of the Detroit Technology Exchange (DTX), a partnership between TechTown Detroit, Bizdom, Invest Detroit and the Detroit Creative Corridor Center. The program is supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corp.’s Michigan Strategic Fund and the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan.

Program Information

DTX Launch Detroit is a highly competitive, 10-week accelerator program designed to help college students and recent graduates explore their entrepreneurial potential, while attracting and retaining talent in the city of Detroit. Launch Detroit runs from May 28 through Aug. 1, 2014.

We are seeking applications from teams of college students or recent graduates aspiring to launch a technology-based or -enabled business. Applications will be accepted through March 14. Accepted participants will receive a stipend of $2,500 per person (up to $7,500 per team).

Launch Detroit uses The Startup Owner’s Manual, a step-by-step business development guide written by famed serial entrepreneurs Steve Blank and Bob Dorf (

Venture teams will develop their businesses by:
  • Exploring markets
  • Developing business models
  • Finding potential customers
  • Acquiring resource
  • Aligning with partners
  • Meeting potential investors
  • Perfecting investor pitches ... and more
It’s a lot to accomplish in just 10 weeks! That’s why you must make it a full-time commitment and operate out of TechTown for the duration of the program.

To be eligible, your venture team must be made up of:
  • Current students from a Michigan college or university; and/or
  • Michigan residents attending an out-of-state college or university; and/or
  • Michigan residents who graduated from a college or university within the last two years (no earlier than 2012).
  • At least two team members who will participate in the program full time.
Note:  Don’t have a team? Come to Venture Team-Up on Feb. 4 to build or join a venture team.

2014 Schedule
  • Venture Team-Up: Feb. 4 (click here to register)
  • Application submission deadline: March 14 at 5 p.m. - EXTENDED TO April 4 at 5 p.m.
  • Applicant Skype interviews: April 23, 24, and 25
  • Announcement of accepted venture teams: April 30
  • Mandatory orientation meeting: May 13 or 15
  • Program starts: May 28
  • Program ends: Aug. 1

 Application Guidelines
  • Submit only one application per venture team.
  • Applications must be submitted online. You can preview the application here.
  • Venture teams must create a three-minute video (max.) about the business (product/service description, value proposition, market, target customers, revenue model). Acceptable video formats are Media Player or QuickTime. Please dedicate at least one minute to having your team members describe their roles in the venture.
All of the above steps must be completed by Friday, March 14 at 5 p.m. (EXTENDED TO April 4). There will be no exceptions.
Finalists will be contacted by April 22 to schedule a Skype interview on April 23, 24, or 25.

Selection Criteria

Selection of venture teams for the program will be based on:
  • Viability of the tech-based or -enabled business idea
  • Current stage of the business
  • Potential to advance the business idea during the 10-week program
  • Quality of the submitted application and video
  • Passion and commitment of the venture team to build a start-up in Detroit
Teams with members that demonstrate a complementary skill set or have different majors are likely to receive more favorable consideration.
